The presence of the friar on stage at the start of the play illustrates the hegemonic rule of the Catholic church at the time. The fact that this presence is upgraded to a morally corrupt Cardinal by the end might suggest that this presence is growing more intrusive, not less - while simultaneously losing its moral authority.
